1980 Sterling

September 2000

I am building an MP3 player for the car which the majority of the new interior is being shaped around. I've also purchased seats from a 99 Civic which I will make fit in some form or another. I also picked up a center console piece from a junkyard from a 98 Hyundai Tiburon which should fit about perfectly for the MP3 project. I also got side pockets from the rear of an 86 Honda Accord hatchback, which with slight modifications will fit in to the side panels on the Sterling.

Once I got to pulling all of the interior parts out and planning the new interior, it was pretty simple to put it all back in. Heres a couple of shots of it taken apart as I studied my plan of attack.

Then, I put it all back together just good enough to be able to drive it to a shop so I could have it tuned up. I kept the console in my house so I could work on it, and just threw some cloth down where the console used to be.

I found rain-guttering which is the exact dimensions of my defroster vents that I am making using air vents from an Accord, and an old 12v blower. It is mandatory in Virginia that cars have defrosters to pass inspection.

This will be the only air system in the car. I plan to remove the old heating system completely because:

  • It saves a bit of weight
  • Its less for me to mess with
  • Trying to make the 1970's levers match with my newer interior was tricky
  • I dont need one in a small-cockpit, in a car which wont see much winter time.
